Try watching the same games played by other YouTubers, and youвЂ™ll see the distinction.

Make no mistake, there is an art to what Dan does. In our troubled times, what could be better for the soul than watching a goose steal a manвЂ™s slippers and toss them in a lake? Wonderful. His recent gameplay videos of вЂUntitled Goose Game,вЂ™ in which a hell-raising goose is tasked with ruining the day of every human within waddling distance, are hilarious.

That aside, DanвЂ™s a perfectly savoury character to have around the house when youвЂ™re trying to get domestic tasks done.Д¬ards on the table - some of his stuff is actually quite amusing even for us adults too. There has been only one mis-step over the years the videos of tasteless game вЂWhoвЂ™s Your Daddy,вЂ™ (in which a baby tries to harm itself while the father tries to save it) arenвЂ™t graphic, but they are a bit disturbing. Other than an occasional вЂJeez,вЂ™ he keeps his language clean, and exercises the same control in the comments sections on his videos.

DanTDM belongs in the same category he produces engaging content every day, and with the greatest of respect to them, heвЂ™s a cut above most of the presenters on kidsвЂ™ broadcast TV channels.Д¬rucially from a parentвЂ™s point of view, his content is also child-friendly. Mrs S and I have long been admirers of Davina McCall - you only really appreciate the art of what presenters do when you see someone do it at that elite level. His subtle use of the word вЂњweвЂќ when talking about what heвЂ™s doing on the game also gets the kids involved. He does something that might seem lonely, and manages to come across like your best pal yapping away in your own living room. His constant cheerful chatter makes you forget that he is, on the other side of the camera, a guy sitting in his room alone, playing video games. Not the Colgate-smile artifice of an American sales rep, but the genuine childlike glee at experiencing new modifications on Minecraft, or a particularly exciting exchange on Fortnite. So whatвЂ™s so entertaining about this young man and his gameplay videos? Well, for a start, thereвЂ™s DanвЂ™s infectious enthusiasm. He gets more of our kidsвЂ™ attention than we do, through the medium of TV screens, tablets and even Mrs SвЂ™s phone, and his daily gameplay videos are the televisual wallpaper to almost every waking moment when the kids are out of school. That blue-haired lad is DanTDM, and for most of 2019 he has - entirely without his knowledge - been a co-parent to myself and Mrs S (heвЂ™s also now sporting a natural hair-colour). For me, it was when I first heard that a blue-haired lad sitting in his spare room playing video games on YouTube was a multi-millionaire. So, my big girl, here you areвЂ¦ enjoy!ДЇor those of us who swore weвЂ™d always be cool, there comes a moment where you realise that youвЂ™ve become totally unmoored from popular culture, and thereвЂ™s no way back.
